About Us

Group of volunteers plogging

We only have one planet. It is up to us to do what we can to protect it.

With this in mind, Green Hour was established in 2018 to raise the awareness in the community of the importance of environmental protection.

With over 80 cleanups, 100+ weekly Bun Run's fighting food waste as well as school and corporate partnerships, Green Hour has managed to make a positive impact in Hong Kong.

Our Mission

Waste management is failing in Hong Kong. Trash is littered across out streets, our beautiful country parks and our beautiful beaches.

Green Hour's mission is to put an end to this nightmare through direct action. Alone, we cannot make a big difference, but together, we can make waves.

By 2030, our target is to put an end to the trash issue in this city through 3 main objectives listed below.

Join us in our goal of making trash history in Hong Kong through our fun, innovative and engaging programmes.

What are the Root Causes/Solutions?

Ending pollution in Hong Kong can feel like an endless uphill climb. We believe the best way to combat the issue is to tackle it at the source of the problem! Below are some of the main causes of the trash epidemic in this city and how we as an organisation will work to solve them.

Lack of Education causes people to litter without care

Often, a lack of real understanding of the issue is what causes trash to accumulate in our streets.

We will spread our message through engaging events and activities

Green Hour aims to change this through direct outreach. Whether through joining one of our events or through booths, our goal is to share our message with at least 100,000 individuals in 2025.

With our events being open to everyone, regardless of age and background, there's no reason to not get involved!

Our target is to organise a minimum of 50 cleanup events in 2025 and prevent 10 tonnes of trash from entering out environment

To reach our target audience number, we will be running various onlie campaigns, as well as opening a regular booth in various locations to target those who are likely culprits of littering.

Infrastructure Issues and lack of bins in key areas

We have all seen the image above. Rubbish bins overflowing, with trash being left on the side. Trails littered with trash because there are no rubbish bins in sight.

Collecting data from our cleanups and site visits will help push for change

Through working with relevant groups, we aim to help improve the systems in place to reduce litter in the city.

By surveying various locations and collecting data, we can push for better implementation of bins throughout the city with the aim of seeing less litter on our streets.

We aim to report all findings from our research not just to the government, but also with the public, to give people an understanding of the issue and encourage everyone to take steps to help fix this problem!

Mismanagement from Contractors

Having seen the same trash in some urban locations week after week, it has become clear that waste management companies are lacking in their commitment.

We will push for better management of streets and support cleaners.

By targeting waste management groups directly, we can call for better cleaning of our streets, encouraging less people to litter.

In doing so, we must acknowledge the hard work that our street cleaners put in every day, and be understanding and respectful of the fact that they are working long hours, many of them aged 60+.

We will call for better protections for street cleaners, push for better work conditions for them, and support them with their work through our ongoing cleaning programmes, such as plogging.

Plogging is a fun running-based initiative which gets people getting fit while cleaning our streets and helping street cleaners in the difficult task of managing our cities waste issue.

Macey Lee

Macey Lee

Bun Run Leader

"Joining the Bun Run has helped me to learn more about my community and food waste, build a routine to do exercise. I also unexpectedly relieve stress from being around familiar faces when collecting and distributing the surplus bread and cakes. It is lovely to build that connection in the neighbourhood."

"I have joined the Bun Run since Sep 2021. With the passion to share such a good experience to others, I started to lead my own route since 2022."

Lottie Ho

Bun Run Leader

From her first time joining a Bun Run event, Lottie was already committed to joining on a regular basis. While initially only in a volunteer capacity, she quickly began offering to help with collection near her home in Kwun Tong.

The elderly that she encounters week after week, as well as the staff in the bakeries, have come to know her quite well and she is no doubt welcomed with a huge smile when they see her. How can you not? Lottie is a superhero!

Want to become a Bun Run leader in your own area? Interested in leading a cleanup drive?
We welcome people of all ages and backgrounds to become a leader and make a difference in their local community, making friends along the way!
