Veggie Eats: Yuen Long & Tuen Mun

ree

"Eating vegetarian in Hong Kong must not be easy"

For anyone who is a vegan/vegetarian, I don't doubt this statement is one you have heard on a regular basis.

"I would try being vegetarian, but I love meat too much!"

Usually, this is what they will follow up with. Personally, I believe that most people who make such a statement haven't fully explored the possibility of trying vegetarian food and realised just how many amazing options there are and the wonderful variety of cuisines and flavours available across the city.

Eating Plant-based is easier than ever in Hong Kong, and I'll be sharing some suggestions of places to check out in different districts.

This time I want to combine two districts together - Tuen Mun and Yuen Long.

Tuen Mun and Yuen Long are cultural and green hubs that are often overlooked. People tend to view Sai Kung as "Hong Kong's Backyard", however I would argue with beaches famous for their sunsets, an expansive wetland park, and Hong Kong's most beautiful reservoir trail with its sweet gum forest, it has just as much a right to claim the title.

Having previously lived in Yuen Long in a village house, I am a big advocate of visiting the northwestern territories of the city, not only for nature, but for the culture. Tin Shui Wai is home to Hong Kong's only surviving ancient pagoda, as well as multiple ancestral halls.

Now you can't just stop off for the sights without working up an appetite, so I've shortlisted some of the vegetarian restaurants I suggest you try out in each district.

Pizza Veg - Kim Po Building, 5 Tsing Min Path, Tseng Choi Street

Food Quality: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Service: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Ambiance: ⭐⭐⭐

Value for Money: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Overall Experience: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

As the name would suggest, the star of the menu is the pizzas. The thick crusts are soft and bread-like and come with creative toppings like "Japanese Wasabi" (with vegan salmon and crab sticks), Vegetarian Mexican (spicy vegan sausage, jalapeños), and Curry Potato (with vegan chicken).

Not a pizza fan? They also have pastas, baked rice, and a variety of snacks like vegan nuggets, soups and spring rolls. I tried the nuggets and I definitely recommend them, but honestly the pizza is really the highlight!

I would mention the vegetarian meat is rather realistic texture wise, especially in items such as the "Meat Lovers’ Pizza" and vegan nuggets. The menu clearly marks egg and dairy-free options, making it friendly for vegans. Granted, the location is slightly off the beaten path, but the food quality and friendly service make it worth the trip.

Fat Chee Vegetarian Restaurant (Yuen Long) - 22 Fuk Hong Street, Yuen Long

Food Quality: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Service: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Ambiance: ⭐⭐⭐

Value for Money: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Overall Experience: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Fat Chee is a long-standing vegetarian gem in Yuen Long, famous for its mock meats (not as realisitc as others in this list mind you) and classic Cantonese dishes.

Must-tries include the crispy fried milk, vegetarian char siu, and steamed dim sum that taste surprisingly close to the original versions. The cozy, no-frills setting makes it perfect for casual meals with family or friends, with options that will appease even the staunchest of meat-eaters. Overall, the generous portions and affordable prices make it a favourite in Yuen Long!

Please note the menu is only in Chinese, however it's a simple design so it's easy to translate with our phones!

Sik6 Sou3 (Tuen Mun) - Chi Lok Fa Yuen, 18 Tsing Hoi Circuit

Food Quality: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Service: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Ambiance: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Value for Money: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Overall Experience: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Sik6 Sou3 (Cantonese for Vegetarian food) is a cozy, Hong Kong-style vegetarian eatery known for its home-cooked flavors, generous portions, and warm service. Popular among locals for its affordable 3-dish meal sets, the restaurant serves flavourful stir-fried vegetables, mock meats, ginger rice, and thick tofu skin congee.

On a cold day, you can enjoy a comforting pumpkin soup and the owner’s warm hospitality, which adds a personal touch to the dining experience. Despite its small size, the space is clean and welcoming. With its great value and wholesome meals, Sik6 Sou3 is a hidden gem in Tuen Mun.

Siddhartha Fastfood (Yuen Long) - 15 Hung Min Court, Yuen Long

Food Quality: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Service: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Ambiance: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Value for Money: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Overall Experience: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Tucked near Yuen Long MTR station, Siddhartha Fastfood is a cozy little spot serving up authentic Nepalese-style dumplings. Though not strictly vegetarian, it offers a tasty vegetable momo option, filled with shredded veggies and mild spices, steamed (or fried) to perfection and served with a variety of sauces. This isn't your typical Chinese dumpling, it's definitely worth trying!

Must-try veg options include Dahi Puri (crispy hollow puris filled with spiced chickpeas and tangy tamarind yogurt), the variety of vegetable curries, and the Thukpa (Tibetan noodle soup). The vegetable Thali is a great way to try a few different flavours all in one go!

It’s a small, no-frills place — but if you're after hearty, affordable, and genuinely tasty vegetarian Nepalese eats, Siddhartha Fastfood hits the spot.

Do let me know if there are any places you think are worth mentioning! I would like to also state I am not affiliated with any restaurants, I simply just love food and would love to share these places with you all!

Let me know which area I should cover next! I look forward to hearing your views and whether you have been to the restaurants mentioned in the article!
