YEARS – Filling Vegan Food That Has You Coming Back for More

I first discovered YEARS (素年) back in 2019 when it first opened in Sham Shui Po, and I’ve been meaning to write up about it for a while! It’s tucked away on Fuk Wah Street, not far from the bustling Golden Computer Centre and various other touristic sights, and from the moment you step inside, it feels like a cozy haven for anyone who appreciates good food with a conscience.

What first drew me to YEARS was its entirely vegan menu — something that used to be rare but is now becoming more common in Hong Kong. Still, what sets this place apart isn’t just the fact that everything is plant-based, but how delicious and satisfying each dish feels. The restaurant opened back in 2019, and they made the switch to fully vegan in late 2020. Since then, they’ve become a go-to spot for vegans and vegetarians alike, offering a mix of Western, Japanese, and fusion dishes.

I remember my first visiting. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I ordered their Thai-style Omnipork linguini. It was rich, slightly spicy, and incredibly hearty. I also tried the cauliflower with beetroot hummus as a side, which was fresh and colourful, balancing out the heavier pasta. Every bite felt intentional, like the chefs really cared about flavour and texture. And the portions? Let’s just say I couldn’t finish my plate — not because it wasn’t good, but because it was generous.

Over time, I’ve returned multiple times, each visit revealing another favourite. One day, I had the Tom Yam risotto, which was creamy and fragrant with that unmistakable kick of lemongrass and chilli. Another time, I went for the Japanese katsu curry risotto — it reminded me of comfort food I used to eat growing up with a Japanese twist, except this version was entirely plant-based and somehow even better.

The staff are generally attentive, making you feel welcome whether you're grabbing a quick lunch or settling in for dinner. They offer oat or soy milk in their lattes, which I appreciate, and the passionfruit lemon soda is a refreshing pick-me-up. Even their desserts are worth saving room for — I was cautious to try their tofu cheesecake, but honestly, it was divine.

One thing I have experienced is that the restaurant can get quite busy, especially during peak hours. If you’re planning to dine in, it might be wise to book ahead, especially in the evenings. Also, I believe they take Octopus card now, however cash is still the main form of payment, so it’s good to come prepared.

What truly keeps me coming back is the sense that YEARS isn’t just jumping on a trend — they’re passionate about what they do. Whether it’s their vegan calamari, their creative burger options, or their comforting Japanese meal sets, there’s always something new to try. And knowing that every bite is cruelty-free makes the experience all the more enjoyable.

So if you're in Kowloon and looking for a place that serves thoughtful, flavourful vegan food in a welcoming environment, YEARS is definitely worth a visit. I’m already looking forward to my next meal there — and trust me, it won’t be my last.
